The Lightness of Being
Ballarat International Foto Biennale 2019
Photographer Victoria McKay, HMUA Debra Kelly
Models: Sammy McCombe and Lucy Carpenter
A collaboration is in essence the living heart of art; people bring skills, visions and backgrounds together and the end result is unique work born from many influences.
This exhibition is the vision of a photographer, which has come to life by being open to, and incorporating, the skills of a HMUA and from the beauty, talent and inspiration of two amazing teenage girls as the subject. It explores the way light affects the girls, how the elements can be harsh and still beautiful on them, how the imagination perceives them and how the rest of the world comes to know them.
About the Artists
Victoria McKay:
Exploring the everyday as well as the unusual has led to a desire to create visual stories with strong and interesting characters, giving them a voice. Victoria sees beauty in all people, and wants all people to see that in themselves. “There is no one who isn’t unique, beautiful and worthy of being a subject in the artistic world I see for them” she says. Victoria loves to work long hours on her own projects, inserting herself into the creative process and completing her vision however she is a strong believer in collaboration as well. Having worked with poets, artists and anyone who wants to share their skills and learn from each other, her motto is “no art is made in a vacuum and no one reaches their full potential if only ever working alone.”
It's not enough to have the feathers. You must dare to fly! - Cass van Krah
The sun is harsh both in the light on sensitive eyes and the burning of their delicate skin – the girls are equally as delicate - and as strong - as a feather.
Growing up closes so many doors. The modern world doesn't allow for miracles, so we don't see them. It's a very precious gift, an open mind, but it's not passive. You've got to nurture it like a bed of roses; otherwise it will wither and die. Make sure you don't close off your mind to things you find strange. Sometimes they may be the only truth. - Tim Lebbon
Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one.’ - C.S. Lewis
While the term fairy goes back only to the Middle Ages in Europe, analogues to these beings in varying forms appear in both written and oral literature, from the Sanskrit gandharva (semi-divine celestial musicians) to the nymphs of Greek mythology and Homer, the jinni of Arabic mythology, and similar folk characters of the Samoans, of the Arctic peoples, and of other indigenous people.
The common modern depiction of fairies in children’s stories represents a bowdlerisation of what was once a serious and even sinister folkloric tradition. The fairies of the past were feared as dangerous and powerful beings who were sometimes friendly to humans but could also be cruel or mischievous.
As it swirls and flies and
the whiteness takes over
they disappear into the secret cold cloak then, blending with the landscape.
they are safe from prying eyes

The human touch is that little snippet of physical affection that brings a bit of comfort, support, and kindness. It doesn’t take much from the one who gives it, but can make a huge difference in the one who receives it. - Mya Robarts
In the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, for in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed. -Khalil Gibran
For I do not exist: there exists but the thousands of mirrors that reflect me. With every acquaintance I make, the population of phantoms resembling me increases. Somewhere they live, somewhere they multiply. I alone do not exist. - Vladimir Nabokov
The wolf said, "You know, my dear, it isn't safe for a little girl to walk through these woods alone.”
Like wildflowers; you must allow yourself to grow in all the places people thought you never would. - E.V
The Forest is dark, dearie, The Forest is dark; The moment you think that you’re lost in the woods, then you are.
Do not lose your way, dearie, Do not lose your way; The monsters are lurking not far from the path should you stray.
Things aren’t what they seem, dearie, Things aren’t what they seem; Kind grins are bared teeth; Please don’t answer the calls from the trees.
Do not pay them heed, dearie, Do not pay them heed; Hear footsteps behind you, beware but don’t fret, they’re just checking.
The air is alive, dearie, The air is alive; To help and to hinder, but it’s how some learned to survive.
These woods are too old, dearie, These woods are too old; Watch for crimson wraiths, keep your strength and wits close should you go.
Deep in the Forest. - Emory R. Frie

Beware the darkness of dragons,
Beware the stalker of dreams,
Beware the talons of power and fire,
Beware one who is not what she seems.
